Some smells are perceived as unpleasant, for which terms such as malodors, stench, bad smells and offensive odors are used. There is no complete understanding what make a volatile chemical compound malodorous, but there are strong indications that the pleasant-unpleasant distinction is largely innate. Certain class of compounds, such as amines and reduced organic sulfur compounds are often malodorous. There are some compounds (e.g. the steroid hormone analog and rotenone), which are perceived as pleasant by some and as unpleasant by others. Undesired smells can be ameliorated by chemical modification of the malodor in the environment by numerous products, e.g. chlorophyll used to remove the smell from used cat litter. Precious few products, however, can be used to alter the perception of certain malodors geared for personal application and individual use. Therefore, there is a need for compositions that can effectively and selectively alter the olfactory perception of unpleasant odors.
